ART Success Story

Lauren Atchley, ART’s Social Media Specialist, sat down with ART Elite Provider, Ken Berkeley, to get his perspective on Active Release Techniques® (ART®) seminars and what ART treatment success he’s seen in his patients.

Ken found a way to fix soft-tissue dysfunction faster. Learn how below.

Q: Introduce yourself. Tell us where you are from, your educational background, and your work history.

A: [I’m] Ken Berkeley from Manhattan, New York City, a massage therapist [with a] bachelor’s [degree] in exercise and sports science from Penn State. I’ve been doing massage since 2015. I needed something to do for my next 50 [years] because I was an acrobat [and] needed a new hip. And I was adept at soft tissue and analyzing things. I was also a sports aerobics national champion and found out that my therapist, Dr. Scott Duke, worked on me the entire time. It wasn’t until I did Full Body that I realized what he was doing on me was ART [treatment]. I’ve been doing that since, I’m Level 2 certified.

Q: How did you find or hear about ART?

A: I was at [the] Swedish Institute with a couple of my classmates. One was a marathoner, and the other was another circus performer. I’m a circus coach and circus performer as well. We realized that ART [treatment], fixed things faster.

Q: What keeps you coming back to ART seminars?

A: I need to know more. I just need to know more. I did my first three courses over a six-week period. I just needed to know the full body first. Every time I did a protocol, I’d say, “oh, wow it works.” My audience at the time, and still are, circus performers. Circus performers work beyond the regular ranges of motion than most.

Q: Tell us about your greatest success with ART treatment.

A: I had my knees done. This knee I had done March this year, and this was June last year. Because of the specificity of movement and rehab, I’ve been able to push my physical therapist to work with me to start box jumping, five weeks, six weeks after my surgery.

Q: What advice would you give someone just starting their ART journey?

A: Practice, practice, practice, practice. Figure out your anatomy. Learn it inside out. Use Visible Body, [and] study it. When you close your eyes. Make sure you see some visible body and apply it.
